"No, it should have been me, and I wish it had been." Calista said bitterly as she gently brushed Krystal's hair from her face. "This is my fault. I got careless and she paid the price. "If I could, I would make a deal with the devil himself if it would save her." she added as she glanced around the battlefield and watched briefly as Gambit fought Melody and Darius continued to drain Storm. She wanted to help them, but using her powers to the bare amount that she did earlier had worn her out again. She could only hope that the others would be able to handle them-for she could not bear to see anyone else killed.

Calista glanced back briefly at Ben, a slight smile on her face. She wanted him to know that she appreciated what he was trying to do, yet the smile did not reach her eyes. "How can I not blame myself-when the bolt was heading straight for me?" she asked. With that she turned away again. "I let her down..." she whispered more to herself than anyone else. "Just like I am letting everyone down now," she thought, her frustration at her own physical weakness rising within her.

"That's easier said then done," Calista remarked quietly. "It doesn't matter where I go," she said added. "I still can not get the image of her being shocked to death out of my mind,"

Calista shrugged before she took Ben's hand. "Well, apparently I am utterly useless right now," she remarked as she glanced at Gambit and then back at Darius as the two continued to fight. She hated the idea of leaving the battlefield, but she had given up arguing already. She had disobeyed Gambit once and it only managed to land her in a whole heap of trouble. "Where did you have in mind?" she asked without much emotion.

"Curse you! She is worth more than you." Calista spat at Jack, her eyes hardening in fury. She was exhausted, but it took all of her control not to try to strike Jack with an energy wave or a lightning bolt. How she wanted to kill the man-slowly and painfully. If he only he was not holding Storm and Melody, she thought, not wanting to risk any harm coming to them.

Calista felt her blood run cold as Jack taunted her with Krystal's death. "Yes," she said quietly, her voice thick. She is worth far more than I am. she thought to herself. "Calista, don't let him mess with your mind!" Darius shouted back to her as he continued to drain Storm. He had heard her conversation with Ben earlier and the pain that he heard in her voice tore at his soul. More than once he had wanted to tell her it was not her fault, but he knew that such words would be empty coming from him, when he too felt the guilt over her death. After all, she had taken the bolt of lightning to save him as well. If he had not been so careless, none of this would have happened-he would not have clone that had nearly killed most of them there, nor would Krystal be dead now. Calista then turned to stare at him with blank eyes. Though his back was toward her, Darius could almost feel her pain. "Krystal's death is not your fault," he told her. "If it is anyone's it is mine. I should have protected you both. She should not have taken the bolt for me" he muttered.

Dan? Whose Dan? she wondered briefly until her befuddled mind realized that he must be talking about the boy that they had just met. Her confusion then turned to anger as Jack now taunted Ben. "Shut up, Jack!" Calista screamed at him. She did not want Ben to blame himself, yes they chased after him, but he was not the one that got Krystal killed. "And you risked yourself to save me, Ben. As did Darius earlier." she added. "And all I have done is cause trouble. If anyone should have died, it should have been me." she responded. "Calista, enough!" Darius yelled back at her, more harshly than he intended, worried that she would go mad with grief or guilt. All he wanted to do was to take her in his arms and erase her pain, but he could not ignore the threat that Storm still possessed. "Calista, please don't talk like that. I don't want to have to see you buried too" he said more gently, keeping his gaze fixed on the fight that he was in.

(So.. I leave for college.. and get a whole fight scene out of it. XD)
Melody lay pinned to the ground as she worked to free herself of Gambit's holding grasp. Unable to squirm out, she quickly lifted the nearest large object she could find and went to hit Gambit with it, fearful that she might be hit in the process, but understanding to the fact that she had to get out of the trap at any cost.
Storm fell to the ground as her knees buckled from weakening. She had been able to counterattack the attack once through lighting, but her strength was too diminished now for her to do much more than kneeling on the ground, hands in front of her face, breathing.

Darius ceased his drain on Storm for now, not wanting to kill her-only to stop her from attacking them. Nevertheless, he watched her intently, ready to start draining her again in a heartbeat if she attacked them again.

"Yes, but it is a victory at what cost?" Darius asked as he glanced down at Krystal, tears in his eyes. "Her death is on my head, she should not have had to die for me" he said quietly. Calista took his hand then, as she leaned slightly against him. Glancing down at Krystal with dull eyes, she could feel the sorrow welling up within her again. "You were not the only one she took the blast for." she said quietly. Darius shook his head as he gently squeezed her hand. "Had I been more aware, this would never had happened." "The same could be said for me." Calista responded. Darius was about to say more when he caught a man walking toward them from the rubble of the old mansion.

"She took a lightning bolt to save me," Calista said as she released Darius's hand and stepped forward-as if to admit guilt for Krystal's death. "If you wish to be her avenger, get it over with." she said flatly, eyeing his gun without trepidation. She knew that she could always create an energy shield to stop a bullet in its track, but at the moment she did not care about her own life. Darius stepped forward in front of Calista then, not wanting her to be killed should the man actually decide to shoot as he contemplated draining him. "She is not responsible for this woman's death." Darius told the stranger. "The bolt would have hit me." He fell silent for a moment before continuing. "I should have been more aware of the battlefield so I could protect her. I alone am responsible." Calista stepped from Darius's protective shadow then. "He's wrong." she said quietly, not wanting Darius to be hurt. She had already seen Krystal die, she did not want him killed too. "The guilt lies upon me," she insisted to Shawn.

"For mercy's sake, leave him alone!" Calista screamed at Jack as she shot a small energy spark (which was all she could manage at the time) at Jack. The spark was enough to cause the man discomfort but nowhere near potent enough to kill him or do him serious injury, thus revealing a portion of her mutant powers as she did so. She then turned her attention to Shawn. "He is not responsible for the girl's death." she told him. "If you shoot him, then you will have innocent blood in her hands, can you live with that?" she asked. Darius studied Shawn, his interest peaking when he said he was looking for the X-Men. "Why do you seek them?" he asked him, wondering if it would be wise to lead him to their new home.

Calista drew in a sharp breath at his words. "How?" she asked him, hope beginning to rise within her. Darius said nothing as he waited for Shawn to respond to Calista's question, his interest heightened. Much like Calista, he would risk just about anything to bring Krystal back to life.

Calista sighed, not sure how much she should reveal to this man. "Two of our own-and possibly a third- went out in search of a friend, fearing that he may be in danger from that man-Jack, who has the ability to possess the minds of all he touches. Krystal being one of them," she said pointing at the lifeless girl on the ground. "And another girl named Kira." She paused then not sure where to begin after that, to recount all the events in full detail would take them all night, and she did not want to relieve them either. "Gambit, Darius and I then set off after them. In short a battle took place...I won't go into details on that as I do not see how it is relevant, and just when it seemed things ended we were attacked by Storm and Melody-both mind-controlled by Jack. To keep the tale short, Storm discharged a lightening bolt at Darius and myself and Krystal jumped in front of it to save us." She sighed heavily then, not wanting to speak any more. "If it is an exchange in lives you need, then take mine." she added. "Calista-no." Darius told her as he glanced at her. "It would be better if mine is forfeit instead."

The group fell into a sullen silence, and Melody took the opportunity to subconsciously hit this new traveler. Lifting up a nearby log, she flew it at Shawn's head.
